Southern Baby Names

I was surprised when I came across the volume of interest that people seem to have in southern baby names and the meaning of southern baby names. While the cadence and mostly Franco-English origin of the names for both boys and girls is consistent for both genders, southern baby girl names trend to the very feminine side of things while southern baby boy names tend to have a masculine, romantic quality to them.

A bit of research reveals that baby girl names most popular in the south and southeastern United States are from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. These names tend to be older, of French or English origin and have a ring of antiquity to them. Southern baby names often are a combination of the first name and middle name together giving them a complete tone. These name combinations are virtually interchangeable between first and middle names. One can take names from the list below in combination and have a nearly endless list of possibilities for first and middle name combinations.

Unusual or uncommon names are no stranger to southern baby names as you can see from the list above, which has over time created a class of names that is entirely unique to this part of the country. Virtue names as you can also see above, have also been a popular feature of southern baby names. You may also noticed the flowery, feminine names for girls, based on the early French speaking settlers of Louisiana, who brought the French name forms of English names used frequently in the Northeast.
